Basics and resistance classes for windows - basic protection with RC1N
Burglar-proof windows - where is it worth investing?
Two thirds of all burglaries do not occur at the front door, but at windows and balcony or patio doors. This is why mechanical window security is a top priority for Käuferle. While alarm systems and costly video surveillance systems merely document break-ins, our latest technology and first-class fittings provide real burglary protection that often allows the perpetrators to leave without having achieved anything.
Resistance classes for burglar-proof windows
The properties of burglar-resistant doors and windows are categorised into seven resistance classes (RC) in accordance with DIN EN 1627. The longer a window offers resistance, the higher its resistance class. Depending on the risk situation and their own security requirements, doors and windows fulfil classes RC1N, RC2N and RC2-6. The N in the first two resistance classes stands for the possibility of national regulations for certain properties.
Window resistance classes - what makes sense for my home?
RC1N offers basic protection against break-in attempts, while RC6 is rather rare in private homes. On the one hand, special laminated security glass and tests are required for RC6, and on the other hand, successful break-ins in this resistance class require heavy equipment and a lot of time. In residential buildings, resistance classes for windows up to a maximum of RC3 are common. You can also find out which burglary protection makes sense for your home from the advice centres of the criminal investigation department.
RC1N as basic protection
Burglar-proof windows of resistance class RC1N protect against vandalism in particular. Compared to windows without classification, they offer basic protection against attempts to break in using physical force and/or simple lever tools. The following applies to burglary protection requirements: Windows in resistance class RC1N should only be used in areas that are not accessible at ground level.
Solid to high protection for windows with RC2N to RC3
Increased basic protection for windows with RC2N
This resistance class offers increased basic protection against attempts to break in using physical force (shoulder throw, kicking, etc.) and/or with simple lever tools, e.g. screwdrivers, pliers or wedges. As with the RC1N resistance class, RC2N also only has requirements for the frame elements, but not for the glazing - window certifications do not have to be checked manually in either class.
Windows from class RC2 "unreservedly recommended"
Burglar-proof windows in resistance class RC2 make it considerably more difficult to break in with simple tools. Products in this class must be tested manually in accordance with DIN EN 1627 and withstand attempts to break in for at least three minutes. In addition, burglar-resistant safety glass must be used. These crucial requirements do not apply to RC1N or RC2N. Therefore, windows are only categorised by the police as "unreservedly recommended" from resistance class RC2.
Käuferle is a police-recommended manufacturer of certified burglar-resistant products
The nationwide burglary protection campaign "K-EINBRUCH" is a police initiative that attempts to bring about a reduction in burglary crime with numerous security tips and educational work on burglary protection. Käuferle is one of the certified suppliers for burglar-resistant products in the police manufacturer directory K-BREAK-IN.
Window burglary protection - RC3 for high requirements
If there is a high need for security or if valuable items need to be secured in a home, it is advisable to use windows of resistance class RC3. In this case, it is assumed that the perpetrators are experienced and have professional lever tools, e.g. crowbars or crowbars. For certification purposes, burglar-proof new windows in class RC3 must be able to withstand break-in attempts for at least five minutes.
Optimum protection through professional installation and intruder alarm systems
Regardless of whether you opt for resistance class RC1N, RC2(N) or RC3 - it is essential for burglary protection on the window that the elements are installed professionally in accordance with the manufacturer's specifications. This is the only way to guarantee the desired level of security. Supplementing the mechanical window security technology with electronic burglar alarm systems makes life so difficult for burglars that they usually abort the break-in attempt prematurely.

Security elements on windows: retrofitting burglary protection
Unsightly window grilles do not necessarily have to be installed in order to retrofit burglary protection to windows. Specialist companies can replace simple window fittings with burglar-resistant fittings or retrofit security elements such as additional lockable locks. Another option is the installation of burglar-resistant laminated safety glass. Whether your windows are suitable for this must be checked in advance.
Windows with burglary protection: retrofitting security films
Self-adhesive transparent security films serve on the one hand as shatter protection in the event of glass breakage. However, they also increase safety by ensuring that panes only break through after being smashed several times in the same place. The security films cannot compete with laminated safety glass. Nevertheless, windows optimised in this way also offer burglary protection. In contrast, retrofitting window frames is often much more difficult.
Secure tilted windows
In terms of burglary protection, tilted windows are considered an invitation to burglars because they can be levered open in a short time, even with screwdrivers. Lockable window handles offer a certain degree of protection. They ensure that burglars cannot reach into the window gap from the side and then simply open the window. If windows are to remain permanently open in the tilt position, only window grilles offer sufficient burglary protection.
