What is most important when buying a front door
Individuality and burglary protection
Regardless of whether they have a purist, modern or more classic, traditional design - entrance doors determine the first impression when entering a house. They should be customisable so that they can be perfectly tailored to the wishes of the residents. However, high-quality materials for fittings, door frames and door panels that fulfil the highest burglary protection requirements are also essential.
Differences between front door and flat entrance door
Flat entrance doors are usually located on internal stairwell corridors - unlike flat doors to open arcades, which do not differ from entrance doors to detached houses in terms of thermal insulation and rain protection. Entrance doors that open outwards are rare, partly because their external hinges require special anti-lift protection. Flat doors that open to the stairwell are not permitted if they restrict the escape route.
Threshold-free - barrier-free entrance doors
Barrier-free flat and house entrance doors make it easier for wheelchair users and people with pushchairs or walking frames in particular to access the home. Entrance doors designated as "barrier-free" in accordance with DIN 18040 (Part 2) must fulfil specified requirements, e.g. a clear width of at least 90 cm. If larger barrier-free door widths are required, double entrance doors with two door leaves and electric drive can also be used.
Materials and configuration options
Entrance door: wood, aluminium, plastic as typical materials
Regardless of whether entrance doors are made of wood, aluminium or PVC-U - these materials have comparable properties in terms of thermal insulation and burglar resistance. The most commonly used materials for entrance doors in residential buildings are wood (which creates a cosy atmosphere) and aluminium - a robust material that gives the entrance an elegant appearance.
Elegance and great scope for design - entrance door in aluminium
Aluminium entrance doors are robust and have optimum thermal insulation properties thanks to thermally separated multi-chamber profiles. Aluminium can also be painted, powder-coated or anodised in any RAL colour, offering countless individual design options. Wood decor foils are also available for closed door leaves and fixed side panels, which look and feel very similar to real wood but are much easier to clean.
Double entrance doors and fixed side panels with or without glass
Regardless of whether timber, aluminium or PVC-U frames and door leaves are used for the entrance door. The design options for your entrance door do not end with the choice of material. If you need more clear passage width, double-leaf entrance doors can be the solution. An entrance door with glass in the door leaf or fixed glass side panels will allow more daylight into the interior.
Roofing, entrance door and smart home
Entrance door with letterbox system and lighting
Inviting entrances not only have attractive floor and wall coverings and canopies, but also high-quality lighting. In addition to the required basic lighting, entrance doors with letterbox systems, handrails and entrance door canopies can also be accentuated with LED strips. Push handles with indirect coloured LED lighting also set special accents.
Sun and privacy protection: entrance door as part of the smart home
In times of digital networking, smart homes are now also a matter of course for the front door of detached houses. Smart home solutions offer numerous reliable and secure access options. They can also be used to control the lighting level of the entrance area as well as the privacy and sun protection for the entrance door and side elements.
Weather protection for your entrance door: glass canopies and other canopies
Entrance areas with canopies and canopies provide excellent rain protection for entrance doors. They keep residents dry when they come home in the snow or rain. However, they are also important for the long service life of the entrance door with letterbox system and lighting because they keep out wind and weather. This is especially true when using a wooden entrance door. Glass canopies and other canopies on entrance doors protect your valuables.
Security, burglary protection and thermal insulation
Camera and security lock for entrance door and side doors
There are many ways to secure the front door: e.g. burglar-resistant security glass, a high-quality security lock for the front door and side doors as well as cameras and alarm systems. Entrance door cameras alone do not provide sufficient security. The best burglary protection is provided by a combination of mechanical security and camera. Entrance doors and windows are categorised into seven resistance classes in terms of their burglar-resistant properties.
Resistance classes for entrance doors
The longer security locks and entrance doors resist burglars, the higher their resistance class RC (Resistance Class) and therefore their burglary protection. Depending on the security requirements and the residential and hazard situation, a house entrance door fulfils class RC 1N, RC 2N or RC 2-6. Classes RC 1N and RC 2N offer basic burglary protection against break-in attempts using simple lever tools and/or physical force.
Thermal insulation of the front door
The Ud value (d=door) is decisive when assessing the thermal insulation quality of an entrance door. As a general rule, the lower the value, the better the thermal insulation. According to the German Building Energy Act (GEG), new entrance doors must have a Ud value of at least 1.8 W/(m²K). Doors with thermally separated door leaves achieve values of up to 0.7 W/(m²K).
Adjustment options and sealing of entrance doors
Adjusting the entrance door - why the right dimensions are important
If a front door becomes "crooked" over time, it can leak, slam loudly or drag on the floor. This can be remedied by adjusting the entrance door, which is easy to do with adjusting screws in the door hinges. Open joints in entrance doors can lead to structural problems in winter due to cold air penetrating. They also reduce burglary protection as they provide additional attack surfaces.
Effective rain protection: sealing the entrance door
Increasingly heavy rainfall events raise the question of how well a front door protects against rain. Improved rain protection can be achieved by installing a canopy - this keeps the entrance door and entrance area dry, while canopies can also serve as sun protection for the entrance door and side panels. Weather strips on the bottom edge of the door leaf also provide protection from the rain. A porous or cracked door seal on the entrance door can be easily replaced with new rubber sealing strips or adhesive sealing strips.
Special door seal: Entrance door with flood protection
In the event of potential flooding, weatherboarding, conventional door seals and rain protection measures are not sufficient. Instead, suitable flood barriers are required, such as flood bulkheads, folding bulkheads or dam beams. Sealing entrance doors with special seals is also an option. Watertight doors must be installed by specialised companies.
